OVERVIEW
The Horizon Program provides a system of support for students with social, emotional and behavioral needs across all school settings. This is a program, not a place, which incorporates a range of settings. The student’s Individual Education Program (IEP) is implemented and supported by the Horizon Program.
The long-term goal of this program is to provide students with the skills necessary to succeed without significant behavioral supports. These skills fall into two primary domains; academic and social. Skills are taught through the use of positive reinforcement for appropriate behaviors and an emphasis on student success. There is minimal attention given to setbacks and inappropriate behavior.
PROGRAM SPECIFICS
The Horizon behavior support system provides a framework built on the principle of positive reinforcement. The word POSITIVE cannot be overemphasized. The behavior support system provides extensive positive feedback in the form of praise and tangible rewards to teach, build and shape positive behavior skills and to extinguish, or terminate, negative behaviors.
This framework also includes a Level System (Level 1-3) with an embedded Token Economy. The token economy works similarly to our monetary system. Students earn points for engaging in appropriate behaviors, which are then exchanged for activities and tangible items. The tokens are earned as points on the Individual Point Sheet and on the Classroom-Wide Point Sheet. To aid in the program’s effectiveness, a Home-Note is completed every day at the end of school.
